From the beginning, Victoria knew her son Micah would need more than the usual medical and developmental support.
Born far earlier than expected and weighing just two pounds, Micah entered the world fighting to grow. As he got older, Victoria noticed small but persistent differences in how he moved, played, and communicated compared to other children. Like many parents, she trusted her instincts—but she also knew she couldn’t navigate this uncertain journey alone.
The support Victoria needed came through HealthySteps, a program of ZERO TO THREE. A Blue Meridian Partners investee since 2016, HealthySteps is a nationwide, evidence-based model designed to support families during the earliest years of a child’s life. By integrating a developmental and behavioral health expert—or “HealthySteps Specialist”—into routine pediatric primary care visits, the program helps parents build confidence, identify concerns early, and connect to resources before challenges become crises.
At Micah’s pediatric visits, Victoria found her HealthySteps Specialist to be a trusted partner who listened closely and helped translate worry into action. Micah received developmental screenings, evaluations, and—eventually—a diagnosis of autism. The process was not linear, but it was consistent, informed, and centered on Micah’s needs.
When systems proved difficult to navigate, HealthySteps stayed alongside the family. The team helped Victoria apply for Early Intervention (EI) services multiple times until Micah was approved. This support enabled them to utilize public benefits, including Medicaid to cover costs, as well as access to the therapies and other services critical to his development.
Today, HealthySteps is expanding its reach nationwide—bringing trusted, evidence-based support to families in over 385 pediatric settings across 26 states. Its effect is felt not in the abstract, but in the experience of parents and children.
